The U.S. Department of Justice provides information regarding the rights of persons confined in jails and prisons, including religious rights, confinement conditions, and civil-rights protections.
These official federal resources are provided for public informational and educational purposes.
Federal law protects the religious exercise of incarcerated persons. Facilities receiving federal funds and correctional institutions generally must accommodate sincerely held religious beliefs unless there is a compelling security interest and no less restrictive alternative.
The Kentucky Department of Corrections Religion Reference Manual provides guidance regarding religious accommodations, faith-group practices, religious diets, volunteer clergy services, and authorized personal religious property items.
The manual is intended to help inmates, family members, correctional staff, clergy, volunteers, and members of the public better understand Kentucky DOC religious policies and accommodation procedures.
Review the Kentucky DOC Religion Reference Manual below to learn about religious accommodations, approved personal religious property items, religious diets, volunteer clergy services, and faith-group practices recognized by the Kentucky Department of Corrections.
Note: Policies, procedures, and approved items may change over time. Users should consult the most current Kentucky Department of Corrections guidance and institutional policies when seeking official information.
The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) establishes national standards intended to prevent, detect, and respond to sexual abuse and sexual harassment in correctional facilities. PREA applies to prisons, jails, lockups, juvenile facilities, and community confinement facilities throughout the United States.
Individuals who believe they have experienced or witnessed sexual abuse, sexual harassment, retaliation, or other civil-rights violations should report concerns through appropriate facility procedures and, when necessary, through external reporting channels.
Individuals who wish to report sexual abuse, sexual harassment, retaliation, or other PREA-related concerns may contact the Kentucky Department of Corrections PREA Hotline.
